As the commander at Camp David during parts of the Clinton and George W. Bush presidencies, I came to see the many sides of the presidential retreat. It’s a place to relax and absorb the sights and sounds of nature or run with the dogs. It’s a place to push physical boundaries—running and biking for Bush, golfing for Clinton at local courses. It’s a place to bring families together for intimate celebrations—the Clintons at Thanksgiving and the Bushes at Christmas.
