It’s not about you – this should be a bumper sticker for leadership. I believe that the greatest leaders are those who successfully execute the mission of their organization and do so with genuine care for their people.
The greatest leaders respect the honor and privilege of leading people and they never violate the trust and responsibility that has been placed upon them. The greatest leaders never lose sight of the purpose of serving their people and clients and they always do it with the highest degree of integrity. Once leaders believe that the organization exists to serve them, they are on a road to ruin and their organization will follow. Their ego, their self-serving actions, and their disrespect for others consume their actions as they marginalize and dismiss other leaders, employees, and the clients as well. I’ve seen it too often in the military, government and private sector and I’m continually disappointed in these types of “leaders.” Great leaders receive their accolades through the personal fulfillment they attain in serving the organization and others. Great leaders have extraordinary self-esteem, humility and compassion, yet they are able to still make the most difficult decisions because they know that they serve a greater purpose than themselves. Great leaders always remember: it’s not about you.
